Why Spay or Neuter?

Elevations in estrogen are known to lower the seizure threshold.  During a dog's heat cycle there is an early rise in estrogens which can lead to an increase in seizure activity.  Spaying will eliminate the constant fluctuations in female hormones and frequently improves seizure control.

Whether or not neutering a male dog will affect seizure control depends on the dog.  Sexual arousal is a seizure trigger for some dogs and in these cases, neutering may help reduce seizures.   Neutering should also be considered to protect against unwanted matings.
